2019 Graduation Commencement Ceremony
May 8, 2019 – Southeastern Technical College (STC) honored its 2019 graduates in a ceremony on May 7 in the Toombs Auditorium in Vidalia. Graduates from the Vidalia and Swainsboro campuses received degrees and diplomas.
Mr. Larry Calhoun, STC President, welcomed the graduating class and the guests on behalf of STC’s faculty and staff, and the Technical College System of Georgia.
“Congratulations on your hard work and dedication that lead you here this evening,” said Mr. Calhoun. “As you begin the next chapter of your lives, I encourage each of you to find passion in what you do, love those around you, and believe in a higher purpose.”
Guest speaker, Mrs. Shirley ‘Sam’ Oates, STC faculty member for the Associate of Science in Nursing program, began her presentation by discussing the importance of path and looking at life’s big picture. She quoted Dr. Seuss, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose! You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.”
Mrs. Oates graduated from the University of Texas with her BSN and a Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Pediatrics and became a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She has a vast variety of clinical and educational experience, including pediatric oncology, in newborn nursery, and in the emergency room. After moving to Georgia, Ms. Oates served this community as a beloved pediatric nurse practitioner for over 30 years before retiring from full-time practice.
The presentation of diplomas was carried out by President Larry Calhoun, assisted by Carol Hansley, Vice Chair of STC Board of Directors, Dr. Barry Dotson, Vice President of Student Affairs, and Karen Vereen, Registrar.
