Student Government Association Places in Statewide Competition

March 8, 2018 – Five students from Southeastern Technical College attended, competed, and four won at the National Technical Honor Society & Statewide Student Government Association Winter Conference & Competitions at the Lodge and Spa at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga. On Feb. 9-11.

Krista Templeton, Je'Ona Washington, Latrelle Mercer, Michael Harden and Nelisa Reaves met with their counterparts from across the state, attended leadership-focused seminars and competed in various competitions.

Washington won first place in the Prepared Speech category, which focused on the biggest challenge facing your organization’s growth. She highlighted ways to accomplish that goal and stressed the importance of being considerate towards all the members of the organization.

"I put in a lot of work and effort within my speech and even though there were days where I couldn't think anymore, I still continued," Washington said.

Mercer, Reaves and Harden won first place in the Chapter Display, in which the group prepared a presentation showcasing how their activities as student leaders tied into the conference's theme, "Wild West: An Organizational Roundup!"

"I think we did very well," Harden said of his group's first place finish. "We spent a good bit of time together and I felt like it was those times that bonded us even more as members."

Attending students saw learning opportunities in the conference's opening session highlighted by keynote speaker Keith Sagers, Chief Operating Officer at Georgia Piedmont Technical College. Sagers reminded the students that as long as they worked hard to achieve their goals, anything was possible.

"The Winter Conference was a confidence booster," Washington said. "I met some really amazing people that made me want to do more within Student Government. This conference was great and I'm so ready for next year.”
