STC Student Group Wins Seven Medals at Conference
April 26, 2017– The SkillsUSA Georgia State Leadership and Skills Conference (SLSC) has, for years, been an event at which Southeastern Technical College students prove their abilities and help shape the course of SkillsUSA, and 2017 was no different.
Faculty, staff and students from STC attended the 2017 SkillsUSA Georgia SLSC in Atlanta at the Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel on March 23-25 and won seven medals.
“We are excited to have three students going to nationals this year,” said Tina Jernigan, STC Business Technology instructor and SkillsUSA advisor. “We are very proud of each and every student that competed and attended the state conference this year.”
Medal winners at the event included: Victoria Phillips of Hazlehurst, who took gold in Cosmetology; Cierra Howell of Lyons, who took gold in Electronics; Margaret Lynn of Kite, who took gold in Employment Application; Casey Stewart of Vidalia, who took silver in Esthetics; Tiera Andrews of Baxley, who took silver in Nail Care; Jessica Barber of Dexter, and Tyler Carlson of Baxley, who took silver in Web Design; and James Pope of Hazlehurst, who took bronze in Information Technology Systems.
“The conference went really well,” said Tony Criswell, STC Electrical Construction Technology instructor and SkillsUSA advisor. “All the students did a great job.”
“Our gold winners are excited about going to Louisville, Ky., for the national conference,” said Criswell.
In June, Phillips, Howell, and Lynn will head to Louisville for SkillsUSA’s 53rd annual National Leadership and Skills Conference where they will compete and network with other state winners and officers.
Southeastern Tech has been a regular participant at SkillsUSA’s national conferences, often bringing gold medalists—including Allison Fowler in 2014, who won a gold in national competition for STC—state officers or both.
SkillsUSA is a national organization of more than 300,000 students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. It helps students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical, skilled service and health occupations excel towards their career goals.
