STC Cosmetology Hosts Consultant from Salon Product Distributor
March 12, 2013 - The cosmetology program on Southeastern Technical College’s Swainsboro campus hosted a guest lecturer on Monday, March 11.
Sam Kang, a consultant from SalonCentric—a salon product distributor in 48 states—spoke to students about the business aspect of the cosmetology world. Pulling from his years as a salon manager and technician, a cosmetology instructor, and a Georgia College & State University business graduate, Kang laid out a 10-step guide to success.
“This isn’t meant to say ‘This is the way to do it, and if you don’t do it this way, you’re not going to be successful,’” said Kang. “This is meant to show that setting and achieving goals is a process.”
Kang used his own experiences to illustrate the value in his process.
“I think the most important thing to the students was his telling them how he got started in the business, how much time it took him to build up his business and where his training has taken him,” said Peggy Braswell, the cosmetology instructor at STC-Swainsboro. “He also impressed upon them the value of a good attitude and setting goals to keep moving forward.”
The 10 steps Kang explained to the students covered goal-setting strategies, guarding against procrastination, positivity, and financial responsibility, among other topics.
“One thing you have to realize in this industry: as artistic and creative as it is, as much beauty as you provide, on the back end of it you have to be smart,” said Kang. “You just have to be. You can destroy yourself making a ton of money and not being responsible with your finances.”
Kang is one of a number of guests Braswell has invited to speak to her classes in order to give them a real-world perspective on the field. Kelli Webb, owner of Studio 204 Salon in Swainsboro, was at the lecture and offered advice and experience as well.
