STC Students Win Six Medals in Georgia College Competition
April 15, 2014 - Members of the SkillsUSA organization at Southeastern Technical College returned from their annual state competition with six medals, including one gold.
The Georgia SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference (SLSC) was held on March 13-14 in Atlanta at the Georgia International Convention Center, and STC sent 16 students to the event.
“[The conference] helps build their self-esteem,” said Tony Criswell, STC instructor and SkillsUSA advisor. “When they compete, whether they place or not, it seems to give them that extra confidence that they can accomplish anything.”
The Georgia SLSC offers SkillsUSA members the chance to compete in nearly 90 competitions, most of which are based on national standards and send the gold medal winner on to national competition.
STC students participated in nine contests and placed in six, resulting in 12 of the school’s 16 attending students receiving medals.
Bronze winners were: Katie Athearn, Skyler Hall, Kimberly Luhta-Rattanlal, Carl Schofield, Karen Strider and LaDonna York for Quiz Bowl; Lashaonda Guilmette for Job Skill Demonstration A; and Erica Rich and Erin White for Esthetics.
STC’s silver medalists were Nathan Hance for Electronics Technology and Angel Jordan for Promotional Bulletin Board. And Allison Fowler won gold for Preschool Teaching Assistant.
Fowler becomes STC’s fourth consecutive gold medal winner at the state level. She’ll move on to the national competition in Kansas City on June 23-27. The early childhood care and education student will be pursuing STC’s first national medal since Monique Weldon won gold in Kansas City in 2011.
