STC Welding Students Compete in National Craft Championships

May 15, 2013 - Two Southeastern Technical College welding students recently returned from the 2013 Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. National Craft Championships in Birmingham, Ala.

Sam Helmy, of Vidalia, and Demetris Lawson, of Reidsville, were sponsored by construction and engineering company Robins & Morton to participate in the structural and pipe welding and oxyfuel cutting competitions. Both students went head-to-head with some of the best apprentices and trainees in the nation from April 30-May 3.

“Both students represented us very well and I could not be more pleased with their efforts and the way they conducted themselves the entire week,” said Michael Crumpler, the students’ welding instructor at STC.

Though neither student placed in the top three in their categories, all parties involved felt great pride in being able to attend and compete.

“I was not disappointed, neither were the students or Robins & Morton,” said Crumpler. “One student summed it up this way, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to come and compete; now I can say that I have competed against the BEST welders in the nation!’”

In fact, the students didn’t have time to feel down. At the conclusion of the competition, Helmy and Lawson were informed that their sponsorship came with more than just a trip to Birmingham.

“Both will be offered employment upon graduation at the end of summer semester with the opportunity to make around $32 an hour welding,” said Crumpler.
