Health Care Science Certificate Program - Phlebotomy Option
HEALTH CARE SCIENCE PHLEBOTOMY OPTION FOR DEGREE PROGRAMS
The purpose of the Health Care Science option – Phlebotomy for degree programs is to earn credits to prepare students for entry into an associate degree program while obtaining credits toward a technical certificate in phlebotomy. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be eligible to apply for entry into the Clinical Lab Technology degree program or the Dental Hygiene degree program. The concentration offered builds upon a common core of general education and Health Sciences core courses. Graduates will be prepared to enter the workforce in a variety of health careers.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The certificate program prepares graduates for employment in a phlebotomy position in a healthcare facility. Today’s phlebotomist is highly trained and uses a wide variety of skills in the workplace. The principal purpose of phlebotomy is to obtain blood samples, at the request of a physician, for analysis in the laboratory.
ADMISSIONS CRITERIA
- Submit a completed application and application fee;
- Be at least 17 years of age;
- Submit official high school transcript or GED transcript;
- Submit official college transcripts, if applicable;
- Meet the following assessment requirements for certificate option:

PHLEBOTOMY CURRICULUM
The standard curriculum for the Health Care Science Phlebotomy option is designed for the quarter system. Students may enter the PHL-103 Introduction to Venipuncture course during Fall and Spring quarters, Vidalia campus, and Winter and Summer quarters, Glennville campus. The Phlebotomy option generally takes 4 quarters to complete. To graduate, students must earn a minimum of 58 credit hours.

**Students with one quarter or greater lapse after completion of PHL 103 must re-take PHL 103 prior to enrolling in PHL 105.

CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS
Students must complete a total of 240 clinical hours within PHL 105. Students must obtain 50 venipunctures and 5 finger sticks from their approved clinical site. Students will be responsible for securing the clinical sites with assistance from the instructor. Prior to beginning practicum courses, students must submit a medical exam stating that the student is in good health. This must include documentation of TB skin testing, and all required immunizations, including Hepatitis B. Students who refuse Hepatitis B vaccination must sign a declination form and be aware that clinical sites may refuse to accept them. Forms will be provided by the instructor.
