The Southeastern Technical College (STC) Board of Directors welcomed the appointment of Susan Thompson as a new board member at its August 22 meeting.

Toombs County Probate Court Judge Tina Lindsey swore in Thompson, who will represent Montgomery County.

Thompson is the HV & TG Thompson Lumber Company office manager in Ailey.

“It is an honor to be asked to serve as a board member. As much as I can appreciate a four-year college degree, with a year of internship as I obtained, the skilled technical labor market is in great demand for educated employees. In the industry that my husband and I are in, we heavily depend on these trained men and women in today’s world, and we wouldn’t be able to operate without them,” said Thompson. “In the transition of putting my family and our family-owned business first, I no longer work in my degree field.”

Thompson graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in nutrition.

The STC Board of Directors meets at least eight times per year. Board members serve a three-year term and can serve two additional three-year terms for a maximum of nine years before retiring from the local board.

Thompson fills Don Betts’ long-standing position on the board. Betts’ was honored for his retirement at the June Board of Directors year-end meeting.

In the coming months, Thompson will attend the Technical College Directors Association of Georgia (TCDA) meeting to become board-certified. To be TCDA certified, a local board member must complete workshops and activities that educate board members on topics they will hear about and deal with concerning Southeastern Technical College and the technical education programs in Georgia. The workshops also inform board members of state and local guidelines that govern the College.

Incoming Board Chair Michael Harrison facilitated the meeting. The vice chair is Will Heath.
